$68 MILLION SCHOLARSHIPS TO ASSIST REGIONAL, RURAL AND INDIGENOUS STUDENTS

14 February, 2006

Over 22,000 students from low socio-economic backgrounds are set to benefit from the $68 million 2006 Commonwealth Learning Scholarships.

“The Scholarships are a five-year $400 million commitment by the Australian Government to assist students with meeting the costs associated with participating in higher education. Indigenous students and students from rural and regional areas are most likely to benefit”, Ms Bishop informed the House of Representatives today.

There are two types of Commonwealth Learning Scholarships - Education Costs Scholarships ($26.2 million in 2006), to assist with the general costs of study, and Accommodation Scholarships ($41.8 million in 2006), to assist students who have had to move away to study.

The scholarships will provide new and continuing students with support for their tertiary studies by providing:

  • 5,047 new students with a $2,080 Education Costs Scholarship
  • 3,531 new students with a $4,161 Accommodation Scholarship
  • 7,529 continuing students with a $2,080 Education Costs Scholarship (awarded in 2004 and 2005)
  • 6,518 continuing students with a $4,161 Accommodation Scholarship (awarded in 2004 and 2005).

The Scholarships are part of the Government’s commitment to achieving equitable participation and outcomes for all Australians in post-school education and training, and improving learning outcomes for Indigenous Australians.
