Transnational Crime Prevention Centre For Wollongong

4 May 2006

The Minister for Education, Science and Training, the Hon Julie Bishop MP, today announced the Australian Government is providing a $12 million one-off capital grant to the University of Wollongong to develop an existing centre of excellence into a global leader in transnational crime prevention.

The University will build a state-of-the art multi-purpose facility to allow the Centre to form the focus of an intelligence and security hub at the University’s Innovation Campus in Wollongong.

Minister Bishop said, “The Centre’s expansion will increase Australia’s capacity to deal with transnational crime. It will build education, research and institutional linkages between Australia and countries in the Asia-Pacific region. It will also assist in building law enforcement networks and increase coordination between law enforcement agencies in our region.”

The Centre was established by the University of Wollongong in July 2000 as an interdisciplinary research and teaching centre within the Faculty of Law. It has since developed an international reputation in the Asia-Pacific region as a focal point for the exchange of information and research into transnational crime.

Today, the Centre provides education in transnational crime prevention, prosecutions and forensic accounting to around 100 domestic students and around 25 international students. Of these, 19 are AusAID-funded students from Indonesia, China, the Philippines and Pakistan studying either a Master of Transnational Crime Prevention or a Master of Forensic Accounting.

“All Australians will benefit from our growing expertise in national and international security,” Minister Bishop said.
