$2 million for Sir Robert Menzies scholarships

During an address at Australia House in London today, the Minister for Education, Science and Training, the Hon Julie Bishop MP, announced the Australian Government’s $2 million endowment for the Sir Robert Menzies Memorial Trust scholarship programme.
Minister Bishop said the trust provides opportunities for Australian postgraduate students to undertake further study at universities in the United Kingdom, and will ensure stronger links between the two nations.
“Educational exchanges build strong relationships and enhance the opportunities available to our brightest scholars,” Minister Bishop said.
This endowment will enable the trust to offer up to six scholarships annually for Australian students to study in the United Kingdom.
“Australia has a deep historic relationship with the United Kingdom and our two countries are firm friends. This funding recognises the importance the Australian Government places on developing the educational linkages between our two nations,” Minister Bishop said.
“Our commitment will further cement the legacy of Sir Robert Menzies, and enhance the strong ties between the United Kingdom and Australia that our eminent former Prime Minister was always keen to foster and maintain.”
The Sir Robert Menzies Memorial Trust was established in 1979 as a joint initiative of the Australian and United Kingdom Governments to commemorate the life and work of Sir Robert Menzies.
