Australia’s best university teachers recognised
28 November 2006
The Minister for Education, Science and Training, the Hon Julie Bishop MP, congratulates the country’s most outstanding university teachers who today received Carrick Awards for Australian University Teaching at a ceremony at Parliament House.
Twenty-two university teachers from across Australia were recognised at the highly competitive 2006 Carrick Awards for Australian University Teaching.
“These awards acknowledge the vital contribution made by individuals and teams to the quality of student learning, from undergraduate teaching to research supervision,” Minister Bishop said.
“They recognise a range of teachers who are acknowledged by their colleagues as making an enormous difference to the learning experiences of their students.”
The premier university teaching award, The Prime Minister’s Award for the Australian University Teacher of the Year, was awarded to Professor Iain Hay, Head of the School of Geography, Population and Environmental Management at Flinders University.
This award is given to an academic with an exceptional record of advancing student learning, educational leadership and scholarly contribution to teaching and learning. Professor Hay received $50,000.
Professor Judy Atkinson from the Southern Cross University and Mr Phillip Rodgers-Falk from Griffith University both received the Neville Bonner Award for Indigenous Education.
Eleven awards were presented to teams for outstanding programmes that enhance the learning of their students. Each team was awarded $25,000.
“I congratulate the winners on their commitment to excellence and wish them all the best in their teaching careers.”
