Towards a world-leading skills passport for Australian students
10 January 2007
The Minister for Education, Science and Training, the Hon Julie Bishop MP, has announced a consortium of universities to develop a single agreed template for an Australian Diploma Supplement. The successful consortium represents 14 universities led by the University of New England and includes the Australian National University and the University of Melbourne.
Development of the Australian Diploma Supplement is in response to feedback from the discussion paper The Bologna Process and Australia: Next Steps. The Bologna Process is part of a process in Europe which aims to establish a single European Higher Education Area by 2010, focusing on curriculum and quality assurance.
“The Supplement will document a student’s outcomes as well as describe the nature, context, content and status of a graduate’s qualification. It will mean Australian qualifications can be better recognised overseas and will help increase mobility,” Minister Bishop said.
“The ultimate aim for the supplement is to assist students and employers, both at home and abroad, by providing a world-leading system for verifying student qualifications. This will involve an assessment of a range of international processes underway in Europe, the Asia-Pacific and the United States.”
The consortium will work with representatives from a broad range of interested groups including students and employer and professional associations.
Minister Bishop has also established a high level steering group to monitor the Bologna Process and related international developments. Membership will include a number of invited individuals who have demonstrated interest and expertise in this area as well as representatives of peak organisations and a student representative. The group will report to both government and the higher education sector on developments in the implementation of the Bologna Process.
“The steering group will help to fill some of the gaps in our knowledge on the latest developments in Europe and act as an important source of advice and leadership on this issue,” Minister Bishop said.
