$54 million to boost Australia’s high level engineering skills2 January 2007 The Australian Government will invest $54 million under the Incentives for Higher Technical Skills initiative so that almost 25,000 people over five years can gain high level engineering skills. The Minister for Education, Science and Training, the Hon Julie Bishop MP, today announced, on behalf of Minister for Vocational and Technical Education the Hon Gary Hardgrave MP, the range of Engineering Diploma and Advanced Diploma qualifications which will now attract employer incentive payments as part of the $837 million Skills for the Future package. “The message from industry and employers is that there is an increased need for higher level skills in engineering and this initiative shows the Australian Government’s commitment to partnering with industry to ensure the future prosperity of our nation,” Minister Bishop said. Employers will receive incentive payments of $1,500 for each employee commencing a targeted Diploma or Advanced Diploma qualification and $2,500 upon completion.
Following industry consultation, there are now a total of 17 qualifications at the Diploma and Advanced Diploma level which attract employer incentive payments. In addition to the existing eligible qualifications, from 1 January 2007, the following eight engineering related qualifications will also attract incentives:
The Diploma of Engineering – Advanced Trade and the Diploma of Engineering - Technical have been eligible to receive incentives since 1 July 2006.
