Universities get $58 million for student services and facilities
26 February 2007
Facilities from sporting fields to medical centres will be built at universities across the country as the Minister for Education, Science and Training, the Hon Julie Bishop MP, today announced funding of more than $58 million for universities to provide new or improved services for students and their local communities.
The 37 new projects have been funded under the Voluntary Student Unionism Transition Fund and the Support for Small Businesses on Regional University Campuses Programme, with 34 of these projects located on regional campuses.
“Both programmes will help universities adjust to the introduction of Voluntary Student Unionism,” Minister Bishop said.
“The projects supported by these grants will provide students all around Australia with improved services and facilities which promote social interaction and good health.
“The grants support a range of improved or new facilities which will enhance university life. The majority of these are also available to the community which emphasises the vital role of universities to their regions.
“This funding is on top of the $160 million that the Australian Government has put back in the pockets of students who can now choose the services they want to support.
“A second funding round will take place later this year,” Minister Bishop said.
Details of the projects are attached. Further information about the programmes and projects is available at www.dest.gov.au/sectors/higher_education/programmes_funding/VSUF.htm
