New CSIRO Research Flagship for Manufacturing
1 May 2007
The Minister for Education, Science and Training the Hon Julie Bishop MP, today announced $36.2 million over four years to further develop research into critical challenges facing Australia’s manufacturing sector.
The additional funding, to be provided to the CSIRO as part of the 2007-08 Budget, will look at ways to assist the development of the sector in an increasingly globalised economy.
Minister Bishop said the funding will enable the creation of a new CSIRO Research Flagship aimed at addressing opportunities in niche manufacturing, primarily focussed on nanotechnology and material sciences.
The new National Research Flagship in Niche Manufacturing will help existing high-value segments of the manufacturing sector become more globally competitive in global supply chains, develop globally competitive medical products, and identify next generation fabricated devices.
“Australia’s nanotechnology capability is growing, with potential applications in health, mining, agribusiness, energy and the environment,” Minister Bishop said.
“Through this initiative, Australia has an opportunity to be an important participant in the emergence of entirely new industries.”
This funding brings the Australian Government investment in CSIRO’s National Flagships Programme to almost $400 million to date.
