Howard Government Supporting Safe Australian Schools

24 May 2007

The Minister for Education, Science and Training, the Hon Julie Bishop MP, today launched National Safe Schools Week 2007, and announced funding of $200,000 for two important research projects into bullying.

“This important, annual week focuses on the outstanding achievements of our schools in providing a learning environment free from all forms of bullying, harassment, violence, abuse and neglect,” Minister Bishop said.

“In Australia, research shows that almost 20 percent of boys, and almost 15 percent of girls, report being victims of bullying at least once a week. Students who are bullied experience lower levels of self-esteem, higher levels of isolation, depression and absenteeism, poorer health and increased suicidal tendencies.

“The Howard Government initiated National Safe Schools Week, to promote the principles of a safe school environment, and has provided funding to all States and Territories to help stage targeted activities.”

“Schools will be encouraged to demonstrate their commitment to student wellbeing, showcase initiatives and implement new programmes. Three national forums will also be held so teachers, students and parents can share their ideas and experiences in creating safe learning environments. There will also be an exciting website competition to engage students in the Week,” Minister Bishop said.

Minister Bishop said Australian Government funding of $200,000 is being provided for two important research projects into covert bullying.

Edith Cowan University in Western Australia, will study the key factors leading to covert bullying and strategies to deal with it.

The University of South Australia will undertake an innovative technology project to record ‘spoken stories’ from students, parents and teachers. These will show the very human face of bullying – real people, real stories and practical solutions.
