$62 million capital funding boost for universities

18 May 2007

The Minister for Education, Science and Training, the Hon Julie Bishop MP, today announced a major funding boost to allow universities across Australia to undertake a range of capital works projects. The funding of $62.1 million is being made available under the Capital Development Pool (CDP) allocations for 2008 and 2009 as part of the current round of CDP funding.

“The allocation process was extremely competitive with 22 capital projects being selected for funding. I am pleased to see that much of this funding will be used by universities to enhance access to quality higher education in regional and suburban growth areas,” Minister Bishop said.

“By focussing on teaching in areas of national importance such as health care and science, we are helping to ensure that our next generation of graduates will have the skills and knowledge to contribute to Australia’s future prosperity.”

These allocations are on top of the $32 million in capital funding announced in January for projects commencing in 2007. Projects include:

  • a new building for the Faculty of Engineering, Computing and Mathematical Science at the University of Adelaide’s North Terrace Campus;
  • an Allied Health Complex at the Casuarina Campus of Charles Darwin University;
  • Deakin Geelong Health Precinct at the Geelong Waterfront Campus of Deakin University;
  • a student accommodation upgrade at the University of New England;
  • a new science and engineering building at Murdoch University;
  • specialist teaching laboratories, ICT infrastructure and facilities for the Faculty of Science, Health and Education at the University of the Sunshine Coast; and
  • a multi-purpose teaching building, lecture theatre and computer teaching facilities at the Ourimbah Campus of the University of Newcastle.

A total of $93.8 million has been allocated in the current CDP funding round for projects in 2007, 2008 and 2009. This is double the amount allocated in the previous round.

Applications will be sought later this month for the next round of CDP funding.

This funding support and support through other higher education programmes is on top of the further investment the Australian Government is making in the future of the higher education sector through the $5 billion perpetual Higher Education Endowment Fund.
