Indigenous students to benefit from reform Programme

19 June 2007

The Minister for Education Science and Training, the Hon Julie Bishop MP, today announced funding for the Batchelor Institute of Indigenous Tertiary Education to assist their Efficiency and Productivity Reform Programme.

Australian Government funding of $2.2 million will be provided to the Institute to undertake comprehensive workplace reform in areas such as staff turnover, skills development, and financial management, including procurement and human resource management.

"Indigenous students will be the ultimate beneficiaries of this Programme," Minister Bishop said.

“It will improve planning and governance of the Institute and will enable it to develop sustainable human resource practices, including workforce planning, which will help to attract high performing teachers.”

The Batchelor Institute, located in the Northern Territory, is Australia’s only Indigenous institution of higher education. It serves students from rural and remote communities, and has a particular focus on health and other courses relevant to the students’ communities.

“The Institute plays a significant national role in Indigenous student access to higher education and its unique contribution will be boosted by this important programme of workplace reform,” Minister Bishop said.

“Improved organisational accountability and performance management will allow Batchelor to respond more efficiently to the needs of its students.”

Funding will be provided through the Australian Government’s Workplace Productivity Programme which aims to improve the efficiency, productivity and performance of higher education institutions to strengthen their capability to manage and implement workplace change.
