New CEO for the Australian Research Council

The appointment of Professor Margaret Sheil as the new Chief Executive Officer of the Australian Research Council was announced today by the Minister for Education, Science and Training, the Hon Julie Bishop MP.

"Professor Sheil's depth of experience in research and research management provides her with excellent credentials to steer the Australian Research Council over the next five years," Minister Bishop said.

Professor Sheil is currently the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Research) at the University of Wollongong, a director of the Cooperative Research Centre for Smart Internet Technology, and is a Fellow of the Royal Australian Chemical Institute.

She is also a member of the Research Quality Framework Reference Committee, and the immediate past Chair of the Australian Vice-Chancellors' Committee Deputy/Pro Vice-Chancellors’ (Research) Group.

“Professor Sheil has shown outstanding leadership at the University of Wollongong and is highly regarded in the research community,” Minister Bishop said.

"Her research management experience is supported by a strong track record of successful grant applications and publications, and a PhD in physical chemistry from the University of New South Wales.

“I congratulate Professor Sheil on her appointment and look forward to her taking up the position on 17 August 2007, and to working with her to advance Australia’s research excellence.”

The Australian Research Council administers the Australian Government's National Competitive Grants Program and supports the highest quality research and research training in science, social science and the humanities.

Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Research) at the University of Wollongong (UOW) having been appointed as PVC(R) in March 2002. Her current responsibilities include the whole spectrum of research and development including commercialisation.

Research Activity
Her research interests encompass the study of biomolecular interactions and applications of mass spectrometry to biological problems and she has 85 publications in international journals. At UOW, Professor Sheil has attracted over $5M in external research funding, a large part of which has been from the Australian Research Council. She is a former President of the Australian and New Zealand Society for Mass Spectrometry and Australian representative to the International Mass Spectrometry Foundation. She is currently an Editor of Rapid Communications in Mass Spectrometry.
