New chair in Australian Literature
7 August 2007
The Minister for Education, Science and Training, the Hon Julie Bishop MP, today announced that the Australian Government will create a $1.5 million endowment to establish a chair in Australian literature at an Australian university.
Minister Bishop made the announcement as part of the Australia Council’s Australian Literature Roundtable in Canberra.
“The teaching and preservation of our nation’s literary tradition is an important function of our universities,” Minister Bishop said.
“Through the creation of this chair, and the surrounding activities, the Government seeks to increase the study of Australian literature in our nation’s universities.”
Australia’s universities will be asked to apply for the right to host the appointment.
The Government will choose the university which can best demonstrate its commitment to Australian literature and is best placed to further promote scholarship in Australian literature.
Minister Bishop said she will write to university vice-chancellors requesting them to submit proposals on how they could best utilise the chair.
