Further $7.6 million Investment in Higher Education11 September 2007
COLLABORATION AND STRUCTURAL REFORM FUND (CASR) Projects approved in 2007
Partners: The University of Technology Sydney, Queensland University of Technology, Curtin University of Technology, Monash University, Australian Power Institute, Integral Energy, Powerlink, SP-Ausnet, Transend, Western Power, Delta Electricity, Country Energy and Transgrid
Lead Organisation: Macquarie University CASR funding: $132,560 Macquarie University will establish an Industry Partnership Programme with local industry to provide training activities for the university’s engineering students, including a work-experience programme, student projects, internships and a guest-lecture programme. The project will support the development of new engineering programmes at Macquarie University and the growth of industry locally. 3. National collaboration in higher-level mathematics instruction using high-speed high bandwidth internet-based communication technology Lead Organisation: University of Sydney Partners: Macquarie University, the University of Wollongong, The Australian National University, La Trobe University and the University of South Australia CASR funding: $1,195,569 The University of Sydney, in collaboration with Macquarie University, the University of Wollongong, The Australian National University, La Trobe University and the University of South Australia, will develop, implement and evaluate learning and teaching systems for advanced and honours-level mathematics education, through the use of high-speed internet-based communication technology (Access Grid Nodes). 4. A regional approach to boosting graduate engineering outcomes to meet strategic industry needs and skill shortages in areas of national significance Lead Organisation: University of the Sunshine Coast CASR funding: $336,134 The University of the Sunshine Coast (USC) proposes to address local labour market needs by incorporating into the design and delivery of its current engineering degree, strong connections with other, local, post-secondary, vocational education and training, secondary and primary education institutions. There is a need on the Sunshine Coast, an area of rapid growth, for engineering knowledge, particularly in relation to building and construction and water management. The project will result in easier pathways between secondary and tertiary providers. 5. Evaluating and implementing cross-university and VET programme provision to enhance institutional efficiency and achieve stronger education outcomes for the Sunshine Coast and Wide Bay-Burnett regional communities Lead Organisations: University of the Sunshine Coast 6. A collaborative approach to enabling sciences courses at regional universities in New South Wales, Queensland and the Northern Territory Lead Organisation: Charles Darwin University Partners: The University of New England, University of Southern Queensland, and the University of the Sunshine Coast CASR funding: $893,400 A collaborative partnership between four regional universities in the Northern Territory, Queensland and New South Wales (Charles Darwin University, University of New England, University of Southern Queensland and University of the Sunshine Coast) will harness each institution’s niche discipline strengths in chemistry, physics and environmental science. Packages of shared high-quality science units will be developed and delivered at the participating institutions. 7. Development of a Master of Integrated Water Management Programme Lead Organisation: International WaterCentre CASR funding: $532,000 CASR funding will enhance the development and delivery of a jointly–badged Master of Integrated Water Management programme (MIWM) being developed by the International WaterCentre, a joint venture partnership between The University of Queensland, The University of Western Australia, Monash University and Griffith University for the collaborative delivery of education and applied research in water management. Programme design, curriculum development, course delivery and supervision of students will be shared across the four partner universities, with significant input from industry, government, non-government organisations and other education and training providers. 8. Equipment for a new Anatomy Laboratory on UTS Broadway Campus Sydney Lead Organisation: University of Technology, Sydney Partners: The University of Notre Dame Australia CASR funding: $400,000 The University of Technology Sydney (UTS) will use the funding to purchase specialist medical equipment and establish a new anatomy teaching facility, in collaboration with The University of Notre Dame Australia.
10. National Collaboration in the Mathematical Sciences: Integrating research, industry and education CASR funding: $1,986,000 11. Repositioning Flinders’ Engineering for South Australia CASR funding: $948,080 Flinders University will use the CASR funding to undertake an extensive re-examination and strategic re-positioning of its electronics related engineering areas. The funding will assist in identifying the University’s capabilities, external opportunities and needs, a distinctive future profile of courses and research that both advances Flinders’ strategic place in higher education and meets state and national needs.
