More than $1 million awarded to Indigenous Australians for research
25 September 2007
Indigenous Australian researchers from five universities will share in $1.12 million over three years to undertake projects in areas such as Indigenous education, violence prevention, climate change and reconciliation through sport, under the Australian Government’s Discovery Indigenous Researchers Development scheme.
Announcing the latest round of funding from the Australian Research Council (ARC) today, the Minister for Education, Science and Training, the Hon Julie Bishop MP, said that seven Indigenous researchers or research team leaders, four female and three male, had been successful.
“Through this scheme the Government is able to identify and support Indigenous Australian researchers with the skill, talent and potential to undertake valuable research, often but not always related to their own cultures,” Minister Bishop said.
The researchers funded in this round will:
- investigate the conditions required for success in classrooms, schools and Aboriginal communities and that empower Indigenous Australian primary school students to fulfil their potential (University of Western Sydney).
- describe the consequences of climate change on marine processes, harvested resources and ecosystem functioning by identifying vulnerable species and habitats, and provide management advice on balancing ecosystem integrity, economic efficiency and ecosystem resilience under climate change (The University of Queensland).
- examine Indigenous and mainstream models of response to Indigenous family violence in Victoria and suggest how partnerships between Indigenous and mainstream responses could inform future policy and funding directions (The University of Melbourne).
- examine the potential for Australian Football as a context for dialogue to assist reconciliation in post-Apartheid South Africa through an understanding of the role sport has played in shaping settler/native relationships in relation to Indigenous Australian participation in Australian Football (Monash University).
- study the effect of cultural stereotyping on Indigenous students' academic outcomes, implement a new intervention to address stereotyping in secondary schools and evaluate the intervention's impact on mental health and academic functioning (University of Western Sydney).
- analyse the context of conflict and violence in Aboriginal communities in five representative localities in NSW to engage and empower Aboriginal people in innovative approaches to restore social order and inform public policy developments about appropriate governance models to enhance Indigenous wellbeing (The University of Sydney).
- undertake a critical multi-method analysis of the Anaiwan people's contribution to the development of music in the New England Tablelands, to contemporary Aboriginal culture and to cultural revitalisation (University of Western Sydney).
The scheme is funded under the Australian Government’s 10-year $8.3 billion commitment to innovation, Backing Australia’s Ability. For more information, visit www.arc.gov.au.
