$70 million in capital funding to go to universities

3 October 2007

Australian universities will benefit from $70 million in funding for capital works projects announced today by the Minister for Education, Science and Training, the Hon Julie Bishop MP.

“This announcement of a further $70 million for 27 universities builds on the $44 million in capital funding announced in May and supports universities in the development of world-class facilities,” Minister Bishop said.

The funding, available under the Capital Development Pool (CDP) Programme in 2009 and 2010, is for projects including:

  • the construction of a new building at the University of Sydney Western Clinical School at the Westmead Hospital Precinct, providing additional facilities for medical and dental clinical teaching;
  • the expansion of La Trobe University’s facilities at the Shepparton Tertiary Education Precinct;
  • a new building at the University of Southern Queensland’s Springfield Campus;
  • new nursing and health teaching facilities at Edith Cowan University;
  • upgrading student accommodation and providing new training simulators at the Australian Maritime College, which is integrating with the University of Tasmania in 2008; and
  • staff and student accommodation in remote and isolated Northern Territory communities to support the Remote Study Centres operated by the Batchelor Institute of Indigenous Tertiary Education.

“The Australian Government, through the CDP programme, supports projects that improve access to higher education in regional and suburban growth areas and I am particularly pleased funding will help initiatives that benefit Indigenous Australians,” Minister Bishop said.

“The Government is also committed to supporting teaching in health care, engineering and science, to build on Australia’s international competitiveness and prosperity.

“In addition to CDP funding, the Government will provide financial assistance for capital and research facilities from the proceeds of the $6 billion perpetual Higher Education Endowment Fund, available from 2008-09.”

A table setting out funding allocations for 2009 and 2010 projects is attached.
