Key Appointment to AIMS Council
5 October 2007
The Minister for Education, Science and Training, the Hon Julie Bishop MP, today announced the appointment of Dr Brian Fisher AO PSM, as a member of the Australian Institute of Marine Science (AIMS) Council.
“I congratulate Dr Fisher on his appointment. This is an exciting time to become involved in the management of AIMS, our only research organisation devoted solely to marine science and technology,” Minister Bishop said.
“Australia has one of the world’s largest ocean territories and AIMS plays a vital role in researching and protecting our marine resources."
Dr Fisher’s extensive experience in public policy analysis, resource management and climate change will provide a valuable perspective on issues of strategic importance to the Council.
He is Vice President and Director of CRA International’s Economic and Policy Analysis practice in Canberra. Previously Dr Fisher was Executive Director of the Australian Bureau of Agricultural and Resource Economics (ABARE) for 18 years.
Over the next four years the Australian Government will provide AIMS with its biggest budget ever – a total of $110.6 million. In the 2007 Budget AIMS received an additional $15 million to support research into marine ecosystems in northwest Australia.
