International students give Australian education a nod of approval

12 October 2007

The Minister for Education, Science and Training, the Hon Julie Bishop MP, has welcomed the results of the 2006 International Student Survey, released today at the Australian International Education Conference in Melbourne.

“These survey results highlight the quality of our education system and the value of the overall Australian study experience for international students,” Minister Bishop said.

“Australia’s unique culture and lifestyle, the quality of the education offering and the fact that we are an English speaking country are the key factors attracting international students to our shores.”

Among the key findings, the survey shows that:

  • 84% of international students are satisfied with living in Australia;
  • 83% are satisfied with the study experience in Australia;
  • 82% are happy with the course undertaken; and
  • 78% are satisfied with the quality of education.

More than 15,000 students participated in the survey. While welcoming the results, the Minister emphasised there was room for improvement.

“The survey results indicate areas where the experience of international students could be enriched further, particularly areas relating to employment opportunities and interaction with Australian students and the broader community,” Minister Bishop said.

“International education is Australia’s fourth largest export and it is important that we continue to improve the provision of education for international students.”

The International Student Survey was a collaborative effort by industry and Australian Education International to obtain a comprehensive, up-to-date measure of the experience of international students in Australia.
