National School Chaplaincy Programme – Round Two Announced
12 October 2007
The Minister for Education, Science and Training, the Hon Julie Bishop MP, has welcomed the Prime Minister's announcement that 1238 schools will receive grants worth $69.2 million under the second and final round of the National School Chaplaincy Programme.
“I congratulate the 829 government schools and 409 non-government schools, which will receive up to $20,000 per year over three years to assist them with providing pastoral care, and supporting student wellbeing and spiritual development,” Minister Bishop said.
The Chaplaincy programme, announced by the Prime Minister last October, will help many schools access these services for the first time, as well as enabling the expansion of many existing chaplaincy services.
“There has been an enthusiastic demand for chaplains, with over 2600 schools awarded grants overall in 2007, representing about 27 per cent of Australian schools,” Minister Bishop said.
“This demonstrates a real need for pastoral care and spiritual guidance in schools, and I am pleased to approve almost 90 per cent of the applications received.
“As a result of the strong interest in the programme, short-term funding of $2.5 million will also be offered to chaplaincy providers who are playing a vital role by assisting schools nationally to recruit, train, place, and support chaplains.
“Overwhelming demand has resulted in an additional $50 million funding commitment from the Australian Government. This boost means we are now investing $165 million over three years to make chaplaincy services available to Australian schools.”
A summary of the successful applications by state and sector under both funding rounds is attached.
