RECOGNISING OUR FUTURE HEALTH WORKERS
25 February, 2005
Queensland’s Indigenous vocational education and training students are in focus today as the Australian Government lauds the achievements of youth involved in an innovative health careers project.
The $100,000 Health Careers Pathways Project has developed innovative, hands-on career awareness and vocational education programmes, including School-Based Traineeships and Apprenticeships in health and aged care.
The successes of the project will be highlighted at the Healthy Futures – Tomorrow’s Workforce Today Forum, held in Brisbane today (Friday, 25 February).
Government Minister for Vocational and Technical Education, Gary Hardgrave, applauded the Pathways Project.
“This project has successfully found local solutions that will serve as models both in Queensland and across Australia,” Mr Hardgrave said.
“There is a real need to connect with young people, especially Indigenous students, to give them a sense of achievement. Vocational pathways also give these students a head start into a meaningful career.
“There are community benefits too –– not just in creating greater employment opportunities for young Indigenous people, but the flow on effects benefiting the health standards of their communities,” Mr Hardgrave concluded.
Case Studies and a resource kit from the Health Careers Pathways Project are currently in development.
