AUSTRALIAN TECHNICAL COLLEGE – NORTH BRISBANE FUNDING AGREEMENT SIGNED

10 February 2005

Minister for Vocational and Technical Education, the Hon Gary Hardgrave MP, along with Federal Member for Petrie and Parliamentary Secretary for Foreign Affairs, the Hon Teresa Gambaro MP, today welcomed the signing of the Funding Agreement for the Australian Technical College – North Brisbane.

Mr Hardgrave said the signing of the Agreement is the final step in ensuring the College will commence operations in 2007.

“This new college will provide another pathway for young Australians to achieve trade training through School-Based New Apprenticeships targeted to respond to local skills needs,” Mr Hardgrave said.

“Students will have the advantage of trade training, and an industry placement in addition to their year 11 and 12 academic studies.

“Trades on offer to students will be: building and construction, metal and engineering, automotive, electro-technology, commercial cookery and hospitality.”

Federal Member for Petrie and Parliamentary Secretary for Foreign Affairs, the Hon Teresa Gambaro MP, said the College will be located at a refurbished site in Scarborough at the Southern Cross Catholic College, with a second campus at St James College in Fortitude Valley to open in 2007.

“The establishment of an Australian Technical College in the North Brisbane region, which includes Redcliffe City, has been made possible by the two organisations, Redcliffe City Council and Commerce Queensland, working together with the strong industry support of local business and employers,” Ms Gambaro said.

“This College will offer increased opportunities to young people in the region while responding to the needs of the local community, business and industry.

“Students at the Australia Technical College - North Brisbane will get the best of both worlds in their studies. They will receive exceptional trade training, real-life experiences in the work force and relevant academic studies that will complement their hands-on training,” she said.
