STATE AND TERRITORY PROPOSALS FOR DISTRIBUTION
OF NEW UNIVERSITY PLACES

9 October 2003 MIN 478/03

I welcome today’s release of submissions from the State and Territory Governments on how the Commonwealth Government should allocate university places.

Advice from a number of universities has also been made available.

The submissions outline options for the distribution of approximately 25,000 new university places to be allocated as part of the Government’s reform package, Our Universities: Backing Australia’s Future.

The 25,000 places are part of 31,500 new university places in the Government’s package, which is currently before the Parliament.

More than 6,500 of the new places will be provided to institutions for areas such as medicine, teaching and nursing.

Places for medicine and nursing in regional areas have already been allocated. Further consultations will be conducted on approximately 4,250 growth places.

The suggestions from State and Territory governments and the universities will help to inform an effective and fair model for distribution of the new places which will be made available from 2005.

This consultation process forms part of my commitment to engage with key stakeholders to achieve the best possible model and I look forward to working with them on this critically important issue.

I thank all the organisations that have contributed to this process and expect to finalise a model for allocating the places by the end of this year to assist universities with their future planning.

The options paper and all non-confidential submissions are available at: http://www.dest.gov.au/highered/csp/default.htm
