GLOBAL EXPERIENCE FOR AUSTRALIA’S LANGUAGE TEACHERS

 6 November, 2003 MIN 512 /03

Some 125 primary and secondary teachers of Chinese, French, German, Italian, Japanese and Vietnamese will be travelling overseas to improve their language skills under a new $4 million Australian Government initiative.

Announced in the 2003 Budget, the Endeavour Language Teacher Fellowships will strengthen languages teaching in our schools.

These Fellowship recipients will have an opportunity to improve their language and cultural skills through an intensive, in-country study programme. Based on the six languages most commonly studied in Australian schools, the countries in which the teachers will study are China, France, Germany, Italy, Japan and Vietnam. The study programmes will take place over a three week period in January 2004.

Primary and secondary school language teachers were invited to apply for the inaugural Fellowships with over 300 applications received indicating the significant interest in this important new initiative.

The Howard Government continues to play a strategic leadership role in the delivery of strong languages education in our schools.

In the 2003 Budget I announced $108 million over the next four years to continue the School Languages Programme and to introduce the Fellowship Programme.

In addition, I have approved $1.2 million, through the Australian Government Quality Teacher Programme, for the professional development of Asian language teachers in Australia over the next two years.

The next round of Endeavour Language Teacher Fellowships will be advertised in June 2004.

I warmly congratulate the Fellowship recipients and wish them well in their overseas study programmes.

A list of recipients is attached.
