HIGHER EDUCATION REFORM PACKAGE
6 November, 2003 MIN 513/03
Media reports today that universities will be worse off under the Government’s Higher Education reform package due to decreases in Commonwealth Course contributions in Accounting, Adminstration, Economics and Commerce are completely wrong.
The media has been misled on this matter by Federal Labor spokesperson Senator Kim Carr.
Senator Carr knows that there has been no decrease in Commonwealth contributions for Accounting, Administration, Economics and Commerce. There is in fact a 7.5% increase in Commonwealth contributions for all courses over three years. This fact is well understood by universities themselves.
He knows because he was given the full policy documents when they were publicly released in May and the information is found on page 13 of Our Universities: Backing Australia’s Future.
The Government is attempting to provide $1.5 billion dollars in new funding for Australia’s universities.
The Labor Party says it is determined to block that increase in the Senate.
The Australian public and the university sector deserves better than Labor’s deliberate misrepresentations. Debate of these important issues should be informed by the facts.
