ENHANCING NATIONAL RESEARCH PRIORITIES

November 28, 2003 MIN 539/03

Today I have announced enhancements to Australia’s national research priorities framework.

How Australians respond to the changing world around them and how they can create a more innovative, responsive national culture are key themes which have been embraced as part of Australia’s national research priorities.

The national research priorities now include a greater emphasis on how people are affected by and respond to the challenges and opportunities confronting our nation.

Late last year, the Prime Minister announced four national research priorities for Commonwealth funded research:

  • An Environmentally Sustainable Australia;
  • Promoting and Maintaining Good Health;
  • Frontier Technologies for Building and Transforming Australian Industries; and
  • Safeguarding Australia.

Since the original announcement I have worked closely with the social sciences and humanities research communities to enhance and refine the priorities framework. This process has resulted in the addition of the following four goals:

  • Responding to climate change and variability (Environmentally Sustainable Australia);
  • Strengthening Australia’s social and economic fabric (Good Health);
  • Promoting an innovation culture and economy (Frontier Technologies); and
  • Understanding our region and the world (Safeguarding Australia).

These important new goals will stimulate further high quality research in important areas such as promoting an innovation culture and economy, fostering creativity, developing appropriate responses to demographic trends, improving our understanding of developments in neighbouring countries, and enabling communities to adapt appropriately in the face of climate change.

These national priorities provide the foundations on which to deliver significant economic, social and environmental benefits to Australia.
