HIGHER EDUCATION TRIENNIUM REPORT
22 December 2003 MIN 582/03
The annual Higher Education Report for the 2004 to 2006 Triennium was released today.
The report provides an overview of the higher education sector in 2003 including a review of the performance of institutions and a report of funding allocations under various programmes for 2004.
The report also includes an update on new Australian Government policies and recent developments, including the higher education reforms that were passed by the Parliament on 5 December 2003.
The higher education reform package will deliver to Australian universities $2.6 billion over the next five years and some $11 billion over the next decade. It includes funding for more than 34,000 university places by 2008.
The reforms will enable universities and students to make informed choices, supported by increased funding, new financing arrangements, subsidised loans and scholarships, and a renewed focus on quality teaching and equity.
As the legislation was only passed by Parliament this month, the interim report contains only 2004 projections.
When this report is published in its final form in the first quarter of 2004, the report will contain projections and allocations on a full triennium basis and incorporate all the changes contained in the reform package.
The passing of the reform package heralds a new era of certainty and growth for Australia’s universities.
The report is available on the DEST website at http://www.dest.gov.au/highered/otherpub.htm
