University students throughout the Geelong region will benefit from 164 new Commonwealth scholarships, worth $486,000, to be awarded to students at Deakin University.
As part of the Government’s $2.6 billion higher education reform package, Australia’s universities have this year begun to receive funding of $17 million for 5,500 new scholarships, building to almost 40,000 over the next five years at a cost of $327 million.
The new Commonwealth Learning Scholarships, worth up to $24,000 over four years, will assist students from low socio-economic backgrounds with the costs associated with higher education. This year, 3,000 new Commonwealth Accommodation Scholarships will provide students from low socio-economic backgrounds from rural and regional areas with up to $16,000 over four years, to assist them with accommodation costs when they move away from home to attend university. By 2008, more than 17,000 students will have benefited from these scholarships.
Also this year, 2,500 new Commonwealth Education Costs Scholarships will provide students with a scholarship of up to $8,000 over four years to assist with education costs such as textbooks and computers required for study. By 2008, almost 23,000 students will have benefited from these scholarships.
I will be joined today at Deakin University by the Federal Member for Corangamite, Mr Stewart McArthur, who has been a tireless advocate for both the University and the local education community.
