VIOLENT UNIVERSITY PROTESTS SHOULD BE CONDEMNED BY THE LABOR PARTY

31 March, 2004 MIN 663/04

At a protest in Sydney a relatively small number of university students have today destroyed property and battled police – police who were attempting to maintain law and order.

While I support the right of all students to protest peacefully, violent protests which destroy public property and put protesters, police and others in danger, must be condemned.

When students caused an estimated $10,000 damage to an historic building at Monash University in Melbourne last week, the Deputy Leader of the Labor Party, Jenny Macklin, said it was “understandable”.

The National Union of Students, which organised today’s protests, supports the Labor Party.

The federal Labor Party must therefore take some responsibility for not doing more to prevent today’s violence.

Mark Latham should immediately condemn those who engaged in these activities and counsel his education spokesperson.
