An expert Ministerial advisory body to advance strategic leadership and direction-setting for Australia’s engagement in international education has been created today.
The advisory body is made up of a broad range of prominent education and business leaders including:
- Dr Jeff Harmer, Secretary, Department of Education, Science and Training (Chair)
- Professor Gerard Sutton, Vice-Chancellor University of Wollongong

- Mr Peter Hendy, Chief Executive, Australian Chamber of Commerce and Industry
- Mr Stephen Newton, Principal, Caulfield Grammar School
- Professor Richard Larkins, Vice-Chancellor & President, Monash University
I am confident the members of the new advisory body will bring a range of expert advice to advance and sustain Australia’s engagement in international education.
Government leadership and support for international education is vital to its development. International students provide the foundation for strong foreign and trade relations, as well as research and scientific exchanges and collaboration that are vital to our continued economic growth and development.
Already many Australian education and training providers have been successful in attracting international students both onshore and offshore.
The new advisory body will build on this success by helping to prepare Australia to take advantage of new opportunities and to improve ways of responding to the challenges facing our international engagement in a changing world.
International education is now Australia’s sixth-largest export earner, bringing $5.7 billion a year to the Australian economy.
Australia is a leading provider of international education services, competitive with the United States and the United Kingdom, and seeks to maintain and enhance its position in an increasingly competitive global environment.
