$1 MILLION BOOST FOR THE HUMANITIES, ARTS AND SOCIAL SCIENCES
23 June, 2004 MIN 761/04
The contribution the humanities and social sciences make to the economy and to Australia’s cultural life will be better known and better appreciated, thanks to Australian Government funding of a new advocacy body for the sector.
The Council for the Humanities, Arts and Social Sciences (CHASS) represents the interests of researchers, educators and practitioners.
It was set up in 2003 with seed funding of $200,000 from the Australian Government. Today’s announcement provides for an annual commitment of $200,000 through to 2007, taking the total contribution to $1,000,000.
The humanities, arts and social sciences are critically important to the future development of Australia and this funding underlines the Howard Government’s commitment to these vital disciplines and their contribution to helping Australians understand who we are and where we have come from.
Not only do they play an important role in the national innovation system, they make a significant contribution to the development of our society, culture and identity.
The Council will help strengthen the role of the humanities, arts and social sciences in Australia, and provide a forum within which academics, students and the broader community can develop more effective ways of engaging constructively with policy-makers.
I congratulate Professor Malcolm Gillies, Deputy Vice-Chancellor of the Australian National University, on his election as the inaugural President of the Council.
