INDIGENOUS NURSING PROGRAMME AND MORE NURSING PLACES FOR METROPOLITAN SYDNEY
8 July, 2004 MIN 800/04
The Indigenous nursing programme currently offered through the University of Sydney will continue as part of any transfer of nursing places between Sydney institutions.
The University of Sydney submitted a proposal to transfer its 275 commencing undergraduate nursing places to Australian Catholic University (ACU) and the University of Technology, Sydney (UTS) next year.
The universities have argued that this would reduce inefficiencies and overlap between institutions and build on the strategic directions of each university.
I have agreed to the transfer on the condition that the Indigenous nursing programme currently offered through the University of Sydney continues through one or more of the other institutions. The universities have assured the Government that this programme will indeed continue and are currently finalising the details.
In approving the transfer I am determined that there will be no reduction of nursing training opportunities in metropolitan Sydney.
In fact the number of nursing places on offer in metropolitan Sydney will increase by 109 by 2008.
There are currently more than 1,700 undergraduate nursing places offered in metropolitan Sydney through ACU, UTS and the University of Sydney.
The University of Sydney currently has 275 of these undergraduate nursing places commencing next year.
Under the new arrangement 165 commencing places will be offered through ACU and 110 commencing places will be offered through UTS – institutions which already have highly regarded undergraduate nursing courses.
In addition to this, an extra 40 places will be provided to UTS next year, growing to 109 by 2008 for nursing in metropolitan Sydney.
This brings the total number of nursing places in metropolitan Sydney to more than 1,825 by 2008.
