$600,000 FOR CAREERS LIGHTHOUSE PROJECTS - HELPING YOUNG PEOPLE MAKE BETTER CAREER CHOICES
27 July, 2004 MIN 823/04
Today I am announcing that the Australian Government will provide $600,000 to support Careers Lighthouse Projects which will highlight and reinforce high quality career education as an essential part of schooling in Australia.
The 50 schools, to be chosen from across the country, will each receive $10,000 to further develop, document and disseminate information about their exemplary career education programmes. These schools will act as champions and demonstrators of best practice in effective careers education.
These schools, or groups of schools, will be selected during the second half of 2004 through a competitive submission process.
In addition to identifying best practice, the funding will also assist these schools, whether secondary or primary, government or non-government, to trial innovative careers advice programmes.
These schools will demonstrate that careers education should be viewed as an integral part of every school’s activities, not just an optional add-on to the formal curriculum.
This project will complement an Australian Government initiative I announced on 16 April this year. This project will see the Australian Principals' Association's Professional Development Council conduct a series of forums in conjunction with major careers expos around Australia to further engage school leaders with local employers and industry groups.
School leaders play a vital role in influencing the effective delivery of career education in schools. The Howard Government is committed to ensuring that all young people in schools across Australia have access to the best possible career education programmes within their schools.
