$20 MILLION BOOST FOR AUSTRALIA’S RESEARCH INFRASTRUCTURE

22 August 2005 MIN 1173/05

Australia’s research information infrastructure will be enhanced with today’s announcement that the Australian Government will invest a further $19.4 million to fund nine projects under the Systemic Infrastructure Initiative (SII).

These projects will allow Australian researchers to tap into new resources and to better share their results with the wider research community. Multi-disciplinary projects will help researchers provide answers to many of the emerging challenges in the environmental, health and security fields.

The research community is to be commended for continuing to work collaboratively to build more secure research repositories and to establish robust, appropriate access regimes to protect intellectual property while maximising Australia’s research output.

One project, Blue Net: The Australian Marine Science Data Network, managed by the University of Tasmania, will link vast data repositories and marine resources that currently reside in academic institutions as well as both Australian and overseas government organisations.

Another project, Molecular Medicine Informatics Model: A Multi-Institutional, Multi-disciplinary Research and Training Platform for Clinical Research, managed by the University of Melbourne, will link and provide access to a range of important types of data and innovative research tools in medical informatics and bioinformatics.

Other projects, such as the Dataset Acquisition, Accessibility and Annotation e-Research Technology Project, will improve access and linkage through addressing the complex legal and technical issues inherent in the management and exchange of research data.

These projects are part of a suite of strategic infrastructure investments under the Australian Government’s $8.3 billion Backing Australia’s Ability initiative that also includes the $542 million National Collaborative Research Infrastructure Initiative.
