$24 MILLION BOOST FOR REGIONAL AND INDUSTRY CAREER ADVICE - HELPING YOUNG PEOPLE MAKE INFORMED CHOICES
19 October, 2005 MIN 2019/05
The establishment of a new national careers advisers network has moved a step closer today with formal contracts being offered for National Industry Career Specialists (NICS) in up to 10 national Industry Sectors and 57 Regional Industry Career Advisers (RICAs).
These initiatives are part of the Howard Government’s $143 million Australian Network of Industry Careers Advisers (ANICA), and follow the 2004 election commitment to increase support for young people aged 13-19 years and assist them in achieving a smooth transition through school and from school to further education, training and work.
The Australian Government recognises that strong industry leadership and employer involvement at the national, regional and local levels plays a pivotal role in assisting young people move successfully from education to work.
The national industry career specialists will raise awareness of emerging industry skills needs, training pathways and occupational and career opportunities in ten key Industry Sectors.
The ten Industry Sectors to be covered will be:
- Transport and Logistics Industries
- Innovation and Business Industries
- Resources and Infrastructure Industries
- Construction and Property Services Industries
- Electro Communications and Energy Utilities Industries
- Community Services and Health Industries
- Government and Community Safety Industries
The regional industry careers advisers will work with Local Community Partnerships (LCP), to provide young people, parents, schools, employers and teachers with comprehensive career information that is relevant, up-to-date and industry-specific.
The 57 regional industry careers advisers will work together with the national industry career specialists to access industry specific advice, and will be ‘on the ground’ industry champions with a comprehensive understanding of local and regional industry skills needs, employment patterns and career opportunities.
Over the next three years, the Australian Government will provide funding of $8 million each year to support the new networks.
Through this initiative, young people will gain a better understanding of the world of work, and have access to high quality advice to help them make successful career and education decisions. Employers will also be encouraged to attract young people into targeted careers, particularly in areas of skill shortages.
The Howard Government is committed to helping all young Australians find and achieve their potential. No young person should feel that the value of their life is determined by the educational choices they make. Their choices in apprenticeships, TAFE or university must be equally valued.
My Department will commence contacting preferred tenderers today and I look forward to announcing further details of successful NICS and RICA tenderers once contract negotiations are finalised.
