2005 WINNER OF NEVILLE BONNER MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP

2 November 2005 MIN 2036/05

Today I am pleased to announce that Ms Nina Lupinacci from South Australia is the winner of the Neville Bonner Memorial Scholarship for 2005.

Established in 2001, this prestigious Scholarship honours the late Senator Neville Bonner AO, the first Indigenous member of Federal Parliament.

The scholarship is awarded annually to an Indigenous student to complete an Honours year in a subject consistent with the ideals of the award.

Ms Lupinacci is undertaking a Bachelor of Arts, Honours in Aboriginal Policy and Management at the University of South Australia and plans to conduct research in the area of the criminal justice system and the effects of incarceration on Indigenous Australian families. Her future plans include undertaking PhD study, and using her research to teach at university level.

The award provides a $18,837 stipend over the full year in 2005.

Apart from the honour of the award itself, the Scholarship provides the holder with the opportunity to explore and challenge ideas, to be creative and innovative, and to contribute in the broader context to the enhancement of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander knowledge.

I warmly congratulate Ms Lupinacci and wish her continued success in her studies and career.
