YOUNG TASMANIAN STUDENT WINS TOP HISTORY AWARD
30 November 2005 MIN 2054/05
I am pleased to announce today that Emily Read from Clarence High School in Bellerive, Tasmania, has won the 2005 Young Historian of the Year Award.
Emily won top honours in this year’s National History Challenge for her outstanding essay on the Snug District Disaster Appeal Committee in Tasmania.
The National History Challenge is a research-based competition giving all students in Years 5 to 12 the chance to be historians, investigate their community and explore their past.
History helps us define who we are as a people. If we are to be confident about where we are going, we need to understand where we have come from.
The winning entries also provided new insights into diverse topics, including the special role animals have played in Australia’s war involvement; the life of Margaret Preston, one of Australia’s foremost contemporary artists; and the impact that the Vietnam War had on our community.
I congratulate Emily on her outstanding achievement. She receives $500, a special Commonwealth medal and plaque. The seven State/Territory winners will receive $200 and a commemorative medal.
The Australian Government will provide $102,000 in funding so that this important student work can continue through to next year’s History Challenge, when the theme will be Turning Points.
I thank the History Teachers’ Association of Australia for organising the National History Challenge annually, and for their continuing efforts on behalf of Australia’s young historians.
The list of winners is attached.
