$1.2 MILLION FOR MONASH SCHOLARSHIP WINNERS

7 December 2005 MIN 2060/05

I am pleased to announce that eight young Australians have been selected to receive the highly prestigious General Sir John Monash Awards.

The highly prestigious postgraduate scholarships, valued at up to $150,000 over three years, will enable these scholars to study at universities in the United Kingdom, Europe and the United States.

The eight outstanding winners were selected from a large field of applicants and will undertake postgraduate study in a diverse range of disciplines including medicine, engineering, mathematics, philosophy, arts/literature and law.

The awards pay tribute to one of Australia’s greatest sons, General Sir John Monash.

Sir John was a brilliant officer in World War 1, leading Australian forces to victory at Le Hamel. He was also an outstanding leader and role model in civilian life and was a strong believer in the power of learning to transform the lives of human beings. These awards honour that vision.

The Australian Government is providing $5.5 million to support the General Sir John Monash Foundation. The Government has also committed to match contributions to the Foundations endowment fund from private and community sources, up to $5 million.

The Monash Scholars for 2006 are Hsien Chan (Medicine), Mark Dawson (Medicine), Kate Mann (Philosophy), Justin Moore (Medicine), Aruna Sathanapally (Law), Sally Thompson (Engineering), Timothy Trudgian (Mathematics) and Bridgit Vincent (Arts/Literature).

I wish each of the eight Monash Scholars for 2006 every success as they pursue their chosen field of study.

Profiles of the Award Winners can be found at the General Sir John Monash Foundation’s Website at www.monashawards.org.
