The Faculty of Education & Creative Arts is committed to furthering the discovery and application of knowledge in education and the arts. A range of programs, specialising in adult teaching and training, performing and creative arts, early childhood, primary and secondary and language teaching are offered. Combined education degrees are also available with the faculty, renowned for the quality of its graduates within the education industry.

The Faculty has a special interest in creating partnerships with community and industry with resource-based learning. Graduates from the Faculty of Education and Creative Arts enjoy one of the highest employability rates in Australia in teaching and in other related careers.

The Central Queensland Conservatorium of Music (CQCM) is part of the faculty. CQCM specialises in producing graduates of the highest quality in the area of music performance. Programs at CQCM involve practical experience working with professionals, some of the best in their fields. Offering sub-tertiary, diploma, degree, and continuing education programs, this specialist institution has developed a diversity of music programs unequalled in regional Australia.

Bachelor of Education (Early Childhood Studies)

Course Description: The Bachelor of Education (Early Childhood Studies) focuses on education issues for children between 0-8 years of age as they apply in a range of settings that include schools, pre -schools, day care centres and kindergartens. The program prepares graduates for teaching in preschools and the first three years of school, as well as being group leaders, directors of day care centres and a variety of other professional positions in early childhood settings.

Principal areas of study: Teaching, learning and planning, Professional practice, Curriculum and pedagogy, early childhood education.

Other: Entry requires successful completion of a registered Associate Diploma in Child Care or equivalent, or considerable relevant workplace experience and recognised training in a childcare setting/school.

Bachelor of Education (Early Childhood)

Course Description: This program is for students wishing to enter the profession of teaching in a range of early childhood settings - childcare centres, kindergarten, preschools, primary and early childhood classes.

Principal areas of study: Key learning areas include english, mathematics, science, technology, studies of society and environment, performing and creative arts and health and physical education.

Course Duration: Undergraduate entry - 4 years (F/T); TAFE Diploma of Early Childhood entry - 3 years (F/T).

Name of Campus: Bundaberg/Gladstone/Mackay/Rockhampton - Years 1 to 3. Year 4 is external.

Bachelor of Education (LOTE) - Japanese

Course Description: Graduates will be qualified as generalist primary school teachers, LOTE teachers of Japanese (K-12), and specialists in language immersion.

Principal areas of study: The course uses the immersion method with 50-80 per cent of the units taught through the medium of Japanese. The "in-country" component experience is a recommended but not essential part of the course during which students spend up to 5 months in Japan at the students’ own expense. Part of that time is spent teaching in Japanese primary schools.

Bachelor of Education (Primary)

Course Description: This course is for students wishing to enter the profession of teaching in primary schools. Students who study the Bachelor of Education have the option of exiting from the course after 2 years with an Advanced Diploma or after 3 years with a Bachelor of Teaching.

Principal areas of study: Major course of studies will provide special skills in each of the following areas: Early childhood studies, mathematics and science, human movement studies, arts studies (drama, music and visual arts). Key learning areas includes English, mathematics, science, technology, studies of society and environment, performing and creative arts, health and physical education.

Course Duration: 4 years (F/T)

Name of Campus: Bundaberg, Gladstone, Mackay, Rockhampton

Mode of Delivery: Students enrolling in Years 1, 2 & 3 of this course must enrol internally. Year 4 is undertaken externally with school-based and mixed mode delivery.

Bachelor of Education (Professional Education (Japanese)

Course Description: This course provides students with the opportunity to develop as professionals in the areas of school education and business. Graduates will be eligible to work as teachers of Japanese and in another discipline area in secondary schools as well as specialists in an other area of business through a comprehensive tertiary program delivered through Japanese immersion and extensive practical experience in schools, industry, the community and in Japan.

Principal areas of study: Students undertake a course that is at least 50% delivered in Japanese. An ‘in country’ component further strengthens the language proficiency as well as knowledge of the Japanese culture.

Course Description: This is a degree with specialisation in secondary education for students wishing to enter the profession of teaching.

Principal areas of study: This course enables pre-service teachers to prepare themselves to teach in a range of secondary education curriculum areas including business studies (for example, accounting, business studies, economics); computer studies; English; creative & performing arts (for example, drama, music); languages (for example, Japanese); mathematics; physical education; science (for example, physics, chemistry, biology); social science (for example, geography, history, legal studies).

Bachelor of Education (Early Childhood Studies - Inservice)

Course Description: The Bachelor of Education (Early Childhood Studies-Inservice) has been designed for practising teachers who wish to complete a fourth year degree qualification with a specialisation in early childhood. The program has been recognised by the appropriate authorities and graduates could seek employment opportunities in a range of positions in early childhood services such as director and group leader in day care centres as well as pre-schools and schools.

Bachelor of Education (Inservice)

Course Description: The Bachelor of Education (Inservice) is an undergraduate degree for teachers who wish to upgrade their qualifications. The program focuses on the professional development of teachers and aims to broaden and deepen their knowledge base.

Principal areas of study: Investigate and critically examine ideologies and beliefs about human nature and society, teaching and learning, and the cultural heritage of education. Develop as informed and sensitive decision-makers concerned with selecting, implementing, and evaluating educational experiences.

Bachelor of Vocational Education & Training (Secondary)

Course Description: The aim of this program is to provide an avenue for workplace trainers and assessors to develop their expertise in the area of senior secondary schooling to meet the requirements of the Board of Teacher Registration and secondary school employment authorities.

Course Duration: Undergraduate entry - 3 years (F/T); Graduate entry - 2 years (F/T), 4 years (P/T).

Other: Direct. Undergraduate entry - Undergraduate students will commence studies with industry qualifications recognised by relevant Industry Training Advisory Bodies (ITAB) as sufficient to teach up to at least Australian Qualifications Framework Level 3 competencies embedded in modules or programs. These experienced practitioners will have extensive experience plus they will have completed formal qualifications in accredited vocational and/or paraprofessional training.

Graduate entry - Graduate entry students will have a 3 year degree or its equivalent as a minimum requirement with courses appropriate to VET teaching discipline areas. Candidates will be advised to: have already completed all Workplace Trainer and Workplace Assessor requirements relevant to their particular industry; or undertake to attain these instructional competencies as part of their entry considerations.

Full registration is gained following the equivalent of 12 months’ successful, full-time teaching. Practicum/Work Placement: 100 days of supervised fieldwork must be undertaken.
