Curtin University seeks to equip its graduates, in all fields, to apply knowledge to the solution of practical problems. Curtin University has one of the most comprehensive ranges of courses in Australia. Curtin offers more than 365 courses at undergraduate, postgraduate and doctoral levels to over 24,000 students. The four teaching divisions are Humanities, Curtin Business School, Engineering and Science, and Health Sciences. In addition, Curtin includes the new Kalgoorlie campus (incorporating the Western Australian School of Mines and the former Kalgoorlie College) and Muresk Institute of Agriculture in Northam.

The Faculty of Education is committed to educational research, teaching and learning through the use of innovative technologies. The Faculty offers a number of undergraduate and postgraduate courses. These cover education in both school and non-school settings and include such areas as Early Childhood Education, Primary and Secondary Education, Vocational Education and Training, Special Education, Tertiary Teaching, Applied Linguistics, Language Eduction and Technology Education. At the postgraduate level the Faculty not only offers Research programs at the Masters and Doctoral level but also programs designed specifically to enhance professional practice.

The Faculty also engages in collaborative course provision with the Science and Mathematics Education Centre, Asian Languages, the Centre for International English, Centre for Early Childhood and Meerilinga. Many student programs include units from other disciplines across the campus and can be undertaken in flexible modes of delivery using on-line and distance education approaches.

Associate Degree in Training and Development

Course Description: This course concentrates on practical instruction competencies, management of instructional environments, instructional technology and the measurement and evaluation of instruction. These studies are integrated with teaching or training activities in the workplace, classroom, laboratory or workshop. Practical instruction competence is developed in the context of on-site instructional settings, with assistance from a Curtin Associate. Participants in the program must be currently engaged in teaching, training or instruction of some kind. The course is not designed as a pre-employment training program.

Principal areas of study: Practical instruction measurement, management of instructional environments, instructional technology, and the measurement and evaluation of instruction

Course Duration: Successful applicants are granted one year advanced standing and consequently requires a minimum of one year full-time study for completion, but is normally undertaken on a part-time basis.

Mode of Delivery: Internal

Year 12 Prerequisites: TEE, TAFE Diploma or equivalent, or Certificate IV in an appropriate occupational area and including a literacy component plus five years of relevant industry experience.

Other: Applicants without these qualifications may gain entry to the University by undertaking the Special Tertiary Admissions Test (STAT). Applicants must also provide evidence of current teaching, training or staff development activities, in which the practical requirements of the course can be met.

Bachelor of Arts (Training and Development)

Course Description: This course provides a degree award for those intending to teach in adult, technical and further education, in community service, government, industry and business. It emphasises the development of professional knowledge and skills through the practical application of theory to teaching and instruction. The development of professional competence is undertaken with special reference to the teaching/learning process as it applies to particular industrial or vocational settings. Field work forms an integral part of each unit and focuses on activities related to teaching and learning and to the development and assessment of learning units and materials.

Principal areas of study: Development of professional knowledge, practical application of theory to teaching and instruction

Course Duration: Successful applicants are granted one year advanced standing. The course requires a minimum of two years of full-time study for completion, but is normally undertaken on a part-time basis.

Bachelor of Education (Early Childhood Education)/(Primary Education)

Course Description: These pre-service courses provide qualifications for those who wish to teach at either early childhood or primary levels of education. The early childhood program prepares graduates to teach children aged three to eight years in early childhood centres and in junior primary classes, the primary program prepares graduates to teach children aged six to 12 years in primary school classes.

Principal areas of study: The course includes units drawn from the following categories: Core studies in education (including compulsory field experience), option studies in another academic discipline, elective studies.

Course Duration: 4 years (F/T)

Year 12 Prerequisites: English and TEE Mathematics or its equivalent (for Primary Education)

Bachelor of Education (Secondary Education)

Course Description: This pre-service course provides qualifications for those intending to teach at the secondary level of education. This course prepares graduates to teach students aged twelve to eighteen years in secondary schools.

Principal areas of study: The course includes units drawn from the following categories: Core studies in education (including compulsory field experience), option studies in education, option studies at depth in one or more academic content disciplines and elective studies. Major areas of study are The Arts (Practical, Creative and Performing Arts), English, Health Education, LOTE (Languages Other than English), Mathematics, Science (Physical, Biological and Human Biological Sciences), Society and environment (Social Sciences), Technology and Enterprise (Design and Technology, Information Technology and Business Studies).

Bachelor of Education (Graduate)

Course Description: This pre-service program provides qualifications for graduates intending to teach at early childhood (aged three to eight years), primary (aged six to twelve years) or secondary (aged twelve to eighteen years) levels of education.

Principal areas of study: The course includes units involving core studies in Education (including compulsory Professional Practice units) and caters for the different needs of the early childhood, primary and secondary groups. Year 1 - Professional Practice experiences of all first year student teachers include a one-week observation and a block practice at relevant levels of schooling. Year 2 - Second year (third semester) students teachers undertake a block period of student teaching in a school. Final semester student teachers undertake their Internship of approximately 375 hours in schools.

Bachelor of Education (Conversion Course for Qualified Teachers)

Course Description: This course provides opportunities for qualified educators to deepen and broaden their professional knowledge and skills. Such educators typically use the course to upgrade to degree status qualifications gained earlier when they first entered the profession. The course is suitable for educators across a wide range of fields (Early Childhood, Primary and Secondary Education, Vocational Education and Training and Development, Higher and Professional Education, Supervisors, Coordinators and Administrators).

Principal areas of study: Policy Studies in Australian Education, The Study of Teaching, Curriculum Theory and Practice, and electives.

Course Duration: 1-4 years (F/T) dependent on the level of advanced standing awarded. The course is offered primarily on a part-time basis.

Year 12 Prerequisites: Not applicable. This is not a direct entry course.

Other: To gain admission to the course, candidates must possess a recognised teacher education qualification, typically a three year Bachelor of Arts (Education) degree or equivalent. There is no requirement that an applicant should be currently employed as a teacher.
