Named after the first woman elected to an Australian Parliament, Edith Cowan University (ECU) actively promotes innovative course content designed to enhance the employability of its graduates. ECU teaching staff are encouraged to adopt a friendly and supportive approach to students. ECU is the second largest university in Western Australia, educating about one third of the State’s university students. Approximately 17,000 students are undergraduates and 3,000 postgraduates.

Four of ECU’s five campuses are within the Perth metropolitan area. The fifth one is at Bunbury, a city 200 km south of Perth. All campuses provide a number of student facilities, such as library and study areas, cafeterias, computer facilities, bookshops, media services and banking services.

Study programs are offered through the following faculties: the Faculty of Business and Public Management, the Faculty of Community Services, Education and Social Sciences, the Faculty of Communications, Health and Science and the WA Academy of Performing Arts. Postgraduate programs include the PhD (Education), Master of Education, Master of Business Administration, Master of Health Science and Master of Arts (Art Therapy).

Bachelor of Arts (Education)/Bachelor of Arts (English, Language Studies, Social Sciences)

Course Description: The combined degree programme is designed for prospective secondary school teachers of English, Languages or Society and Environment/Social Science. Students combine professional education studies with specialist content studies in two teaching areas. Graduates will have a qualification in both Education and their selected field in Arts.

Principal Areas of Study: Within the double degree the units are shared between Education and English/Languages/Social Sciences.
The Education component has sixteen units – six Education Studies Secondary units; six Curriculum units; a Research unit; Assistant Teacher Programme unit; Information Technology and Learning unit; and one School of Education Elective unit. For English, the units include Literature, Language and Textuality, Literature, Discourse and Society, Language and Writing, The Power of Practical Writing, Reading the Media, Introduction to Language, Cross-Cultural Communication and Discourse, Teaching of English, Teaching Upper Secondary English, Teaching English Literature, Language, Culture and Learning in Australian Society, Language in Teaching and Learning Contexts. For Languages a variety of French and Japanese units are included. For Social Sciences, the units are chosen from: History, Geography, Politics and Government, Sociology/Anthropology, Aboriginal Studies or Economics.

Course Description: The purpose of this double degree is to provide a balance between professional education studies and content studies for prospective secondary school Business Education teachers. Graduates will have a qualification in both education and in business.

Course Description: This course provides a realistic and relevant balance between professional education studies and content studies for prospective mathematics and science teachers. Graduates from this program will have a qualification in both education and their science/mathematics discipline.

Bachelor of Arts (Education and Training)

Course Description: The Bachelor of Arts (Education and Training) is designed to provide a customised and flexible course, in collaboration with international institutions, to students who have completed a Diploma or recognised equivalent or higher award seeking to upgrade their qualifications to a Bachelor degree.

Principal Areas of Study: The course consists of twenty-two units, comprising six education core units; three core curriculum studies; and thirteen elective units which normally include six units in a specialist field with the option of six units in a second specialist field.

Course Duration: Three years full-time or equivalent part-time. However, the period of delivery of the course will depend on advanced standing and the remaining number of units that will be delivered to each client.

Bachelor of Education (Early Childhood Studies) (Kindergarten Through Primary) (Primary) (Secondary)

Course Description: The course prepares students to teach in the early childhood, primary, secondary or music education streams. Provision is made within the course for students wishing to teach in Catholic Schools.

Principal areas of study: The study of teaching curriculum applications and teaching practice are central themes in this course. The Bachelor of Education offers units that enable a student to specialise in a particular area or combine a number of related areas of study. Bachelor of Education (Special Education)

Course Description: This course provides an opportunity for students to work in the field of special education. The first two years of the program are completed in the Bachelor of Education (Early Childhood, Primary or Secondary) course. Upon successful completion, students may then transfer to the Special Education degree.

Principal areas of study: The course prepares students to teach children and adolescents at various levels: those with specific learning difficulties in mainstream classes, those with mild to moderate disabilities in Education Support Units and Centres, and those with more severe disabilities in Special Schools. Units on current issues in special education, direct instruction and behaviour management are offered in the course.

Course Duration: 4 years (F/T)
