The Flinders University of South Australia

Bachelor of Education (Junior Primary/Primary)
Bachelor of Education (Upper Primary/Lower Secondary)
Bachelor of Education (Secondary Science)

Founded in 1966, Flinders has over 700 academic staff across all disciplines, who teach 12,200 students. Studies lead to Bachelor, Masters and Doctoral degrees, and graduate diplomas. To meet changing needs, and the demand for specialised education, Flinders has introduced more than 30 new degree courses in recent years, in such disciplines as biotechnology, environmental management, cultural tourism and aquaculture. Since 1999 it has taught a new undergraduate major in "Globalisation" which aims to equip graduates to understand the human and physical environments of our rapidly changing world. In a parallel development, Flinders, in conjunction with LaTrobe University in Victoria, is setting up an international network of up to 15 universities to diversify its degree programs and
enhance research opportunities for staff.

The University has four faculties: Science and Engineering, Health Sciences, Social Sciences and Education, Humanities, and Law and Theology. In addition, it supports four theme-based research institutes. Flinders University is the only single campus university in South Australia and the only one with on-site student accommodation in the Adelaide metropolitan area. It is set on a 165-hectare site in the foothills, 11 kilometres south of Adelaide's city centre.

The School of Education at Flinders University offers three four-year pre-service teacher education programs, one of which prepares students for teaching at the primary level (Years R - 7), another for teaching at the upper primary-lower secondary or middle school level (Years 6 - 10) and the other for the teaching of secondary science
and mathematics. All reflect the School's commitment to close staff-student interaction, the quality of teaching and learning, cooperative links with schools, the incorporation of new technologies, research into teaching and continuous review of its programs. In support of these commitments, programs are only offered on-campus. However, students may undertake field placements in either urban or
rural settings. The School describes student to staff ratios as very healthy, although class sizes vary greatly because of program flexibility. While the primary program allows a number of choices of general study options, the upper primary-lower secondary program requires students to specialise in two curriculum learning areas and the secondary science program requires specialisation in two areas from the sciences.

Bachelor of Education (Junior Primary/Primary)

Course Description: This course prepares teachers wishing to work with younger children, is comprehensive across the curriculum and provides formal qualifications covering Reception to Year 7.

It combines professional with general studies, providing the background necessary to enter the teaching profession with confidence, teach both general and core subjects, recognise that all children are individuals, and work effectively in a wide range of learning contexts. Flinders also prepares upper primary/lower secondary teachers, and secondary school teachers; as well as areas in Gifted Education for students with high intellectual potential; and Special Education, for those with intellectual disabilities or other disadvantages.

Principal areas of study: The course has two discrete segments. The first two years (for undergraduate students) concentrate on general studies and offer a wide range of topic options. The second two years (for all students) involve professional and educational studies in areas such as curriculum and teaching practice. The course may be studied as undergraduate or graduate entry programs.

Course Duration: 4 years (F/T) or equivalent (P/T) [2 years for graduate entry program]

Bachelor of Education (Upper Primary/Lower Secondary)

Course Description: This course prepares teachers who are sensitive to the physical, emotional, intellectual and social issues associated with students in transition from primary to secondary school and equips them to work with students aged from 10 to 15 as they move through the adolescent stages. Graduates of the Upper Primary/Lower Secondary course have found themselves in demand as more and more schools move to embrace the Middle Schooling concept. In addition, many find interesting work in training settings in industry, the public sector and in personnel services areas.

This course combines professional with general studies, providing the background necessary to enter the teaching profession with confidence, teach both general and core subjects, recognise that all children are individuals, and work effectively in a wide range of learning contexts. Flinders also prepares junior primary/primary teachers, and secondary school teachers; as well as areas in Gifted
Education, for students with high intellectual potential, and Special Education, for those with intellectual disabilities or other disadvantages. The course may be studied as undergraduate or graduate-entry programs.

Bachelor of Education (Secondary Science)

Course Description: This course has been designed to provide graduates with a broad base in general science and mathematics, specialist expertise in two disciplines of their choice, and the professional skills and knowledge to support curriculum and science teaching at upper secondary levels. A significant component is the teaching practicum in the third and fourth years, which gives students the opportunity to practise their teaching under supervision
in a range of government and non-government schools.

Principal areas of study: The course content is divided equally between science/mathematics and education topics. In first years students select two fields of specialisation from mathematics, physics, chemistry, biology, earth sciences or information technology. First and second years are essentially science studies, more specialised education studies and curriculum studies are introduced in third year. An eight-week practicum is undertaken in the first semester of fourth year.

Course Duration: 4 years (F/T) or equivalent (P/T)

Name of Campus: Flinders campus

Mode of Delivery: Internal

Year 12 Prerequisites: It is assumed applicants will have undertaken at least two Science subjects at Year 12 to fulfil the background requirement for two teaching disciplines in this degree.
