Where required, these courses offer the qualifications needed to apply for registration as a teacher with the Queensland Board of Teacher Registration. Undergraduate courses are offered at the Mt Gravatt, Gold Coast and Logan campuses, and include Bachelor of Education - Primary, Bachelor of Adult and Vocational Education, Bachelor of Education - Secondary, Bachelor of Education - Special Education and Bachelor of Technology Education. Practical experience is an integral part of studying education at Griffith. Students’ on-campus education studies are complemented with practical teaching and other experiences in schools, colleges and other workplace settings recognised by the Queensland Board of Teacher Registration. By enabling students to apply what they have learnt, Griffith aims to provide the encouragement and experience needed to become a skilled, analytical and reflective teacher or trainer.

Bachelor of Adult and Vocational Education

Griffith’s Adult and Vocational Education course has been designed to prepare educators and trainers in industry, TAFE, post-compulsory schooling, or adult and community education. The course offers three majors:

  • Adult and Vocational Teaching
  • Adult Literacy and Numeracy

This is a four year degree for which two years of advanced standing are credited on entry. You may exit halfway through the course with an Associate Diploma of Vocational Instruction. This is appropriate if you plan to work as a tutor or demonstrator, or if you are involved in training as part of your occupation.

Year 1 studies introduce you to the key concepts and values underlying adult and vocational education. In particular, the course examines communication and change, teaching and learning, and curriculum development. In Year 2, the introductory themes are expanded into three majors. It is possible to complete more than one major as part of your degree. These include:

  • Adult and Vocational Teaching
  • Human Resource Development
  • Adult Literacy and Numeracy

Where this course can take you
As a graduate, you will be qualified to work in the vocational education and training (VET) sector – which includes TAFE, industry and private training providers, and post-compulsory schooling – or a human resource development role in the private or public sector. Students who complete the Adult Literacy and Numeracy strand may seek employment in the field of literacy and learning.

Course Duration: 2 years full-time/flexible; 4 years part-time/flexible

Name of Campus: Mt Gravatt campus

Prerequisites: Vocational qualifications and industry experience; workplace trainer certificate with modules in planning and delivery or equivalent; and word processing skills.

Other entry requirements: Applicants are required to have a technical qualification or equivalent; have completed an instructional skills course; and be able to word process assignments. Applicants complete a qualifications passport which takes into account their previous qualifications and experience, and will determine their eligibility for entry. This provides flexibility in that strengths in some areas can be balanced against other areas. On entry, you will be granted two years of advanced standing on the basis of your technical qualifications and industrial experience. The course is not available to school leavers. Application is made directly to the Faculty of Education. You will be required to undertake teaching practice in a vocational education, training or workplace setting as part of the course.
