The course focuses on teaching and children’s learning within a social setting and covers all the key learning areas. Students gain important practical experience in a range of early childhood settings including kindergartens, childcare centres and primary schools with opportunities for practicum experience overseas or in remote areas. Graduates may seek employment in preschools, childcare centres, primary grades, and other children’s services and specialist early childhood settings. Principal areas of study: Students undertake compulsory studies in education, early childhood studies, professional field experience in child care, pre-schools and primary schools as well as methodology-oriented studies in each of the pre-school/ primary school curriculum areas. Core primary units focus on teaching and children's learning covering all the key learning areas including arts, English, a language other than English, mathematics, health and physical education, science, studies of society and environment and technology. Studies in secondary education focus on adolescent learning and the nature of education, classroom teaching and practice in schools, education and its relationship to society, and the planning implementation and evaluation of the school curriculum. Students who want to study secondary education as a double degree must have at least two years of full-time academic study in two units in the non-education degree that leads to two teaching methods in the final year of the program. Bachelor of Primary EducationCourse Description: This course provides initial preparation for primary teachers and focuses on teaching and children’s learning within a social setting, covering all the key learning areas. Students have the opportunity to include general study options during this course, and gain overseas and remote practicum experiences. Graduates will be eligible for employment within state and independent primary schools and related teaching services. Principal areas of study: Teaching and curriculum studies (including a teaching practicum), education studies, general studies in the sciences, humanities or expressive arts. Bachelor of Secondary EducationCourse Description: Offers preparation for teaching in secondary schools and TAFEs, and provides students with the opportunity to select studies from other faculties to enhance employability as teachers and develop strengths and interests in other career areas. The program focuses on the study of adolescent learning and the nature of education, classroom teaching and practice in school, education and its relationship to society, and planning, implementation and evaluation of the school curriculum. Students must select a minor (two years) and a major (three years) sequence from one or more faculties which must satisfy requirements for undertaking teaching methods and employment requirements by the Victorian Department of Education, Employment and training, and the non-government sector. Principal areas of study: prescribed sequence in Education which includes education, teaching and learning and curriculum studies. Principal areas of study: adventure education, leadership and programming, swimming and water safety, introduction to outdoor recreation education, social issues in sport and outdoor recreation, biophysical foundations of human movements. Students also select a minor sequence in business, management, marketing, psychology, Koorie studies, resource management and environmental studies as well as undertaking the major studies in sport and outdoor recreation.
