Combined Degrees in Secondary Education
Southern Cross University believes that the natural attractions around the University’s campuses help students to enjoy a relaxed lifestyle. The University encourages the development of a caring, friendly campus environment and the locations mean that living costs are generally lower than metropolitan areas. The University’s relatively small on-campus student populations allow minimisation of class sizes and Southern Cross University actively promotes the development of personal interaction between lecturers and students. Campuses have academic support facilities such as libraries and computer labs, and student organisations have a philosophy of personalised service. Off-campus students receive academic and administrative support through the University’s network of external study centres, the telecommunications facilities across the region and through electronic and on-line technologies. Strategically oriented links have been established with institutions in more than 30 countries overseas including the USA, United Kingdom, Netherlands, Finland, France, Japan, People’s Republic of China, Germany, Sweden and Canada, and students have the opportunity to participate in a student exchange program for half a year in one of these countries. Southern Cross offers a number of on-campus and external courses as well as professional development programs, industry training, research and consultancy opportunities. Students can choose from a selection of courses (some available through external study) in Business, Commerce and Management; Education; Indigenous Studies, Law and Justice; Social Science and Human Services; Information Technology; Multimedia; Human Movement; Nursing; Naturopathy; Psychology; Environmental Science; Tourism; and Arts including Media, Visual Arts, and Contemporary Music. The courses emphasise ‘real-world’ skills and vocational training and are designed to give graduates a competitive edge in the employment market. To ensure our courses remain workplace relevant, the University seeks to maintain strong industry links. A number of the courses have been developed in direct consultation or partnership with industry and employer groups, and feature a practical workplace component. Learning to teach by being with children is the main principle behind the Teacher Education degrees conducted by the School of Education at Southern Cross University. In practice this is based on the internship and practical programs which represent at least 25% of the course requirements each semester. As early as a month after starting university, students are placed in an infants/primary classroom to begin their learning and teaching with their pupils. Throughout the first year of their course, whole day experiences in this placement class continue on a weekly basis. Classroom routines are picked up, teacher-pupil rapport is established, and a close bond is developed between the teacher education students and their classrooms. This pattern continues for each year of the course, with a different school/grade each year. Other special aspects of the School’s approach to teaching and learning are the Mentor Scheme and Support Programs, which have been in operation for several years. These provide for the training of second year students to initially support their fellow students and subsequently to act as mentors for first year students in all aspects of their studies and experiences at university. The School of Education
also offers a number of Combined Secondary Teaching degrees to provide a
high quality teaching qualification is specific curriculum areas.
