Armidale is a regional centre and offers sporting, recreational and cultural programs, a cinema centre and nightlife, as well as a clean environment, with National Parks nearby. Internal students can enjoy comparatively small class sizes and the possibility of strong academic interaction with staff. Lifestyle is collegial, with more than half of internal students living on-campus in residential accommodation. External students study courses by distance education, increasingly using information technology for learning materials as well as the more traditional print and audio media. Campus facilities include the library and access to computing facilities and the Internet. Most courses offer a choice of subjects within the basic course plan, and all courses encourage students to develop general life skills to round out the value of their education. The University of New England offers a number of awards in education from pre- service teacher education awards through to doctoral programs, where students can complete their studies either on-campus in Armidale, or by distance education. In the area of Early Childhood Education the University offers a Bachelor of Teaching (Early Childhood Education) which articulates with the two year TAFE Diploma program. Graduates of the Bachelor of Teaching can proceed to the 4th Year Bachelor of Education (Bachelor of Early Childhood Education). In the area of Primary Education, the University offers a four year Bachelor of Education (Primary) program on campus or a combined Bachelor of General Studies/Bachelor of Teaching degree by distance education. For students who already hold tertiary qualifications and who wish to become primary teachers, the University offers a graduate entry Bachelor of Teaching (Primary), which is equivalent to two years of training. This course is designed to accommodate the various state requirements with regard to teacher training. Likewise with secondary teacher education, the University offers a one-year Graduate Diploma in Education or a two year graduate entry Bachelor of Teaching for students who already hold a relevant undergraduate degree. As initial secondary teacher education awards, the University offers combined teaching degrees in Arts, Commerce, Science and Music, both on-campus and by distance education. For those already employed wishing to undertake professional development through in-service awards, the University offers graduate entry Bachelor of Education programs, as well as a Master of Education and Doctor of Education.
