The University of New South Wales, with its campuses located in the inner suburbs of Sydney, and through University College at the Australian Defence Force Academy in Canberra, offers both specialised and generalist courses across a number of disciplines, to over 30,000 students. Free e-mail accounts, access to computer, scientific and technical laboratories and learning support centres, as well as libraries containing two million items, are some of the facilities available to students. The University of New South Wales encourages students to participate in the social and cultural life of the University and provides campus cinemas and drama theatres, sporting facilities - including an Olympic-sized heated indoors pool - and offers students hundreds of clubs and societies for pursuing individual interests. The University of New South Wales seeks to meet the demands of employers by encouraging innovative course design and teaching methods. Several courses include a structured program of industry training or professional placement. The University offers combined degree programs, including non-traditional combinations such as engineering, medicine or commerce and arts, as part of its mission to provide flexibility for students. The University also has a commitment to a program of general education, which seeks to develop graduates who have an understanding of the environment in which they live and who have enhanced skills of critical analysis. The Bachelor of Arts/Bachelor of Education and Bachelor of Science/Bachelor of Education degrees require students to study theory of education during the 4 years of their combined Degree while studying their Bachelor of Arts or Bachelor of Science subjects. Theory of education consists of two compulsory first year subjects, Educational Psychology 1 and Social Foundations of Education, followed by an additional three upper level subjects in Years 2, 3 and 4. Each subject requires 3hrs/week attendance and most subjects are taught using two lectures and one tutorial per week. Currently, practice teaching and Method subjects are taught in Year 4, as are Professional Issues in Education and Special Education. Lecture class sizes vary between 50 and 200 students while tutorials contain approximately 25 students. Bachelor of EducationCourse Description: Students of Education investigate such questions as how people learn, what factors affect learning, how ability can be tested and the relationship between Education and other disciplines. BA and BSocSc graduates with some background in Education would be well prepared for supervisory, training and managerial careers.
