The main campus of the University of Southern Queensland (voted by the GOOD UNIVERSITIES GUIDE as Australia's University of the Year - 2000-2001) occupies a 78.7 hectare site in Toowoomba, an hour’s drive west of Brisbane. Students have access to facilities that include a newly constructed recreation centre and university- owned residential colleges. The University has a teaching facility at Hervey Bay on Queensland’s central coast and maintains several study centres in Queensland and major eastern cities. The University has over 20,000 students studying arts, business, commerce, education, engineering, creative arts, nursing, computing, surveying, and science.

The University of Southern Queensland seeks to cater to the needs of its student body through a strong commitment to flexible educational delivery in its vocationally oriented courses. In addition to its on-campus educational programs, the University serves as a distance education provider with a particular responsibility for ensuring the provision of higher educational opportunities to a broad cross-section of Australian society. Of the total student body, over 70 per cent are enrolled externally, 43 per cent are from rural or geographically isolated areas, and 40 per cent are aged 30 years or older. The University of Southern Queensland also conducts an international education program, with overseas student enrolments exceeding 4,000 in 1998. The University has over 300 Australian students enrolled in more than 40 other countries. The University of Southern Queensland has an established track record in Education. The University believes that students benefit from the expertise of experienced teaching staff, as well as from the quality of the courses. Academic staff are encouraged to be approachable and provide individualised attention to students. Access to a range of schools and early childhood centres in the region allow students to develop appropriate practical skills and abilities. Further Education and Training students are able to complete their degrees off-campus through distance education while remaining in employment. The University’s teaching courses are recognised by the Board of Teacher Registration, the major professional body in Queensland and graduates also qualify to register with similar bodies in other states. Professional accreditation also applies to most courses in Child Care and Further Education and Training.

Bachelor of Early Childhood Studies (Child Care)

Course Description: This course is designed especially for people who wish to become directors of child care centres. It is a new course designed to meet the demand for three-year trained directors. The course gives students the skills to create effective teaching programs and learning environments for young children. Students will also graduate with the skills to administer a child care centre, plan and work within a budget and effectively manage staff. Bachelor of Education (Early Childhood)

Course Description: This course prepares you for a career working with young children in a range of early childhood education settings, such as child care, preschool and early primary school. As a graduate, you will have the skills to design and deliver effective teaching programs for children up to eight years of age. This course is available also as a 2 year graduate entry program.

Principal areas of study: The course consists of three major study areas: professional studies; content studies; and curriculum studies. Professional studies combines educational foundation study with field experiences. Content studies covers the concepts within subject areas, content knowledge, and the structure and characteristic modes of inquiry appropriate to early childhood. Early Childhood Curriculum studies allow students to develop knowledge of curricula including mathematics, language, social studies, science, music, physical education, health, and art. During the course students have the opportunity to specialise in one of the following areas: Languages other than English (LOTE), Educational Computing, the Arts (Visual Arts or Music), Maths and Science or Physical Education.

Bachelor of Education (Further Education & Training)

Course Description: This degree seeks to extend the systematic, coherent introduction to the body of knowledge, the underlying principles and concepts, and the problem-solving techniques developed in the Bachelor of Further Education and Training. In short, through advanced critical analysis of post-compulsory education and training policies and practices, this four-year degree seeks to facilitate the development of a high level of specialised expertise.

Principal areas of study: The course consists of five areas of study: Course design, implementation and evaluation; Instructional process and practices; Education foundation studies in lifelong learning in the post compulsory and training context; Content area studies to extend prior trade or professional qualifications; and Education elective studies in management, open and distance learning, second language teaching or psychology.

Course Duration: 4 years (F/T equivalent) completed by P/T study

Bachelor of Education (Primary)

Course Description: This course places emphasis on the integration of theory and practice in primary teaching and enables students to have a career in primary teaching. This course is available also as a 2 year graduate entry program.

Principal areas of study: The course consists of three major study areas: professional studies; content studies; and curriculum studies. Professional studies combines educational foundation study with field experiences. Content studies covers the concepts within subject areas, content knowledge, and the structure and characteristic modes of inquiry. Curriculum studies allow students to develop knowledge of curricula including mathematics, language, social studies, science, music, physical education, health, and art. Optional studies are available and may be undertaken in any faculty in the University. Students may choose to specialise in one of the following: educational computing; languages other than English (LOTE); mathematics/ science; music; physical education; or visual arts.
