The Department

In DEST there is a great variety of IT work using the latest technology. Access to comprehensive training is provided which may lead to industry recognised Microsoft Certification. The training and experience you gain is likely to stand you in very good stead for future promotion - either in the public service or elsewhere.

The Work

If successful you can expect to commence your career doing professional and personally rewarding IT work. You’ll be working and training in an organisation offering good prospects for further development and promotion. The work you do is for the benefit of all Australians. For example, your work could help:

  • improve people's access to education, employment and vocational training opportunities;
  • bring career information to people in remote communities;
  • help market Australia's education and training overseas.

The types of work performed include:

  • Development and support of innovative and advanced applications for the internet, intranet and desktop;
  • Systems analysis, business analysis and data modelling;
  • Database design and programming; and
  • Desktop PC and server support.

The Technology

  • Desktop PCs running Windows XP and Office XP;
  • Servers running Windows 2000 (and in some cases .NET);
  • .NET, C#, Visual Basic 6.0, Active Server Pages, SQL Server 2000, Internet Information Server 5.0, Visual Café Java, Javascript (ECMA Script), HTML, XML, SOAP, Web Services;
  • TRIM (records management system); and
  • SAP (financial and human resource system).
