Letter to Participants

(UNISA Letterhead)

30th June, 2001

Dear

Enclosed please find an information sheet and consent form in relation to a research project the Centre for Research into Nursing and Health Care is undertaking on behalf of the Nursing Education Review Secretariat. The project is titled: Nursing Career Pathways.

Your organisation has been identified as being important to achieving the stated aims of the project and accordingly we are seeking active participation by a key person who can represent the views of the organization in relation to the research focus. We are seeking your assistance in identifying the relevant person and have enclosed a consent form for completion and return in the reply paid envelope.

Following return of the signed consent form, a member of the research team will contact your nominee regarding a mutually acceptable time for a telephone interview. Prior to the conduct of the interview, a briefing paper will be forwarded highlighting the nature and scope of areas to be discussed. Further participation may be requested in the form of a face-to-face interview or participating in a focus group, and consent for such follow-up contact will be sought. In addition, we will negotiate with your nominee for access to any organizational documents that may be relevant to the project.

Your earliest and prompt return of the consent form in the reply paid envelope is greatly appreciated so as to facilitate the progress of the research, as ethics approval for the project is dependent on receipt of signed consent forms. I draw your attention to the statement in the consent form that the views of the organization as stated by the representative may be identified in the final report. Please be assured that the identity of the key person will always remain anonymous.

If you have any queries please contact the research assistant for the project Edith Reddin Ph. 08 8302 2695 or email at edith.reddin@unisa.edu.au

Thanks you for your assistance in this matter.

Your truly,

You are invited to participate in a research project that aims to produce the first comprehensive analysis of the understandings, relationships and comparisons of career pathways for Australian nurses to inform the deliberations of the Nursing Education Review Secretariat.

Objectives:

The objectives of this project are

  1. Identify literature based data and pertinent stakeholders to provide insight into understandings about current and potential future career pathways in nursing,
  2. Conduct a critical literature review framed by specific questions related to career pathways to gain an understanding of how career pathways are currently articulated in Australia and internationally,
  3. Consult with identified key nursing stakeholders, and other health, educational, regulatory and industrial professionals to identify potential future career pathways,
  4. Critically evaluate findings and re-assess new knowledge with current knowledge related to career pathways, and
  5. Prepare a final report that, details all of the above and, makes recommendations on career pathway models.

Research Question:

The project is a descriptive and exploratory multi methods study aimed at addressing the following key questions:

To what extent do career pathways for Australian nurses

  1. Articulate flexible career pathways, within and out of nursing,
  2. Address current and projected nursing workforce needs,
  3. Integrate nursing with other parts of the health work force,
  4. Demonstrate coherence / links between educational and industrial awards,
  5. Organize, link and show the need for, and importance of specific and ongoing education and training,
  6. Describe nursing as an attractive, diverse and skilled career and relevant career choice?

Research Design:

The project comprises five stages. Stages 1-4, uses multiple methods to help to collectively build an account of career pathways and offer recommendations for future career modelling in Australian nursing. This is done to impact positively and directly on the content and style of career pathways in Australian nursing. These methods will also enable a comprehensive description of the issues that impact on career pathways.

We are seeking your permission initially to participate in a telephone interview. The interview, with your consent will be audio-taped, recorded and transcribed. You may later be asked to participate in a face to face interview and / or focus group that also will be audio-taped, recorded and transcribed. All telephone interviews and focus groups will be conducted by members of the research team, and audio-taped by a professional group to ensure anonymity and accuracy of data collection. No participant will be identified personally at any stage throughout the study or in the final report without their prior consent

While participation in the project will assist the National Nursing Education Review Secretariat in its deliberations, participation remains voluntary and you can withdraw at any time.

At the completion of the project all information collected including audio tapes and transcriptions will be securely stored at the Centre for Research into Nursing and Health Care, City East Campus of the University of South Australia for the mandatory seven years and then destroyed.

The Human Research Ethics Committee, University of South Australia has approved this research study. If you require any further information please contact:

Follow Up Letter

(UNISA Letterhead)

27th July, 2001

Dear

The research project titled Nursing Career Pathways on behalf of the National Nursing Education Review Secretariat is well under way, and many organisations have responded to our request for input.

Your organisation was highlighted as being important to the stated aims of the project though at this time there has been no record of a response for a representative to participate in the project.

In the event that you have not received the information related to the project, we have enclosed another information sheet, consent form and reply paid envelope for your convenience and look forward to hearing from you in the near future.

Due to conditions placed on the project by the Human Research Ethics Committee of the University of South Australia we are unable to contact organisations for specific comment without first receiving a signed consent form.

Any further queries can be directed to the research assistant for the project Edith Reddin Ph. 08 8302 2695 or e-mail at edith.reddin@unisa.edu.au

Thank you for your cooperation in this matter.

Yours truly
