analysis as one phase of this project. Use of documents will be in accordance
with National Health and Medical Research Guidelines for the Ethical Conduct
of Research.
This project commenced on the 18th June and is required to be completed
by the end of September 2001. We would appreciate your response by the
16th July or earlier if possible.
If you have any queries please contact the research assistant for the
project Edith Reddin Ph. 08 8302 2695 or email at edith.reddin@unisa.edu.au

You are invited to participate in a research project that aims to produce
the first comprehensive analysis of the understandings, relationships
and comparisons of career pathways for Australian nurses to inform the
deliberations of the Nursing Education Review Secretariat.
Objectives:
The objectives of this project are
Identify literature based data and pertinent stakeholders to provide
insight into understandings about current and potential future career
pathways in nursing,
Conduct a critical literature review framed by specific questions related
to career pathways to gain an understanding of how career pathways are
currently articulated in Australia and internationally,
Consult with identified key nursing stakeholders, and other health, educational,
regulatory and industrial professionals to identify potential future career
pathways,
Critically evaluate findings and re-assess new knowledge with current
knowledge related to career pathways, and
Prepare a final report that, details all of the above and, makes recommendations
on career pathway models.
Research Question:
The project is a descriptive and exploratory multi methods study aimed
at addressing the following key questions:
To what extent do career pathways for Australian nurses
Articulate flexible career pathways, within and out of nursing,
Address current and projected nursing workforce needs,
Integrate nursing with other parts of the health work force,
Demonstrate coherence / links between educational and industrial awards,
Organize, link and show the need for, and importance of specific and ongoing
education and training,
Describe nursing as an attractive, diverse and skilled career and relevant
career choice?
Research Design:
The project comprises five stages. Stages 1-4, uses multiple methods
to help to collectively build an account of career pathways and offer
recommendations for future career modelling in Australian nursing. This
is done to impact positively and directly on the content and style of
career pathways in Australian nursing. These methods will also enable
a comprehensive description of the issues that impact on career pathways.
We are seeking your permission initially to participate in a telephone
interview. The interview, with your consent will be audio-taped, recorded
and transcribed. You may later be asked to participate in a face to face
interview and / or focus group that also will be audio-taped, recorded
and transcribed. All telephone interviews and focus groups will be conducted
by members of the research team, and audio-taped by a professional group
to ensure anonymity and accuracy of data collection. No participant will
be identified personally at any stage throughout the study or in the final
report without their prior consent
While participation in the project will assist the National Nursing Education
Review Secretariat in its deliberations, participation remains voluntary
and you can withdraw at any time.
At the completion of the project all information collected including
audio tapes and transcriptions will be securely stored at the Centre for
Research into Nursing and Health Care, City East Campus of the University
of South Australia for the mandatory seven years and then destroyed.
The Human Research Ethics Committee, University of South Australia has
approved this research study. If you require any further information please
